AWARD WINNING MOTION DESIGN PROJECT (COLLABORATION WITH DAVID PROBST, JR.)
THE MISSION
In early 2020, David Probst, Jr. approached me about collaborating on a motion design project for the Colorado Springs chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF). David is an extremely talented motion designer working out of Colorado Springs (check out his work here).
We met with the AAF Board and they gave us free reign to create a video to serve as an introduction to the 2020 ceremony, which was held at the Ent Center for the Arts. The video needed to set the tone for ceremony, introduce the evening’s theme, and get the crowd excited for the evening to come.
The challenge would be to create the entire video from scratch in about 2 months.
THE OUTCOME
We created a nearly 2-minute video, met our deadline, and proudly attended the ceremony where the video was played.
THE IMPACT
The video was a smashing success at the awards ceremony. The crowd got hyped from the video, and it set the tone for the entire evening. The producers liked it so much, they ended up playing the video three times that night, and invited us to create another video the following year.
The video won a Gold Addy award and a Judge’s Choice award at the 2021 AAF Awards.
The theme was “The Great Adsby”, so we envisioned a Mad Men style protagonist getting invited to the ceremony, and us following him on his journey there. We storyboarded it out, and got started. Initially, we were going for a noir vibe, as evidenced by one of the initial style frames below.
ADJUSTING THE PLAN
However, we ended up pivoting from that dark noir motif, and went with a more colorful vibe. We also decided to streamline the story so that we get to the event sooner. We ended up skipping the protagonist getting his invite at home, and instead had him listening to a radio ad for the event in his car. This also let us put some focus on the radio ad itself (this is the American Advertising Awards, after all).
Because that the theme was The Great Adsby, we were able to throw in a few Gatsby references (see if you can spot them).
ACCOMPLISHING THE GOAL
We also wanted to really get the crowd at the ceremony to feel excited for the event that was about to take place. We wanted it to be a party! The plan was to accomplish this through the second half of the video (when the protagonist arrives at the ceremony), which transitions from a more realistic real-world aesthetic to a trippy, cartoony, bright mishmash of 1920s garb, cocktails, instruments, and more.
And with that, the curtains raise, and the ceremony begins.
REFLECTION
It was a blast getting to work on this project with David. And it was incredibly fulfilling to see it shown live at the ceremony. The video was very well received, as the producers ended up showing it three times that evening. It was indeed a night to remember.
In a meta twist, we ended up winning a Gold Addy award and a Judge’s Choice award for this video at the 2021 AAF Awards.
